Dear Friends,
Looking for a smile today? I recently came across journals I kept for my children when they were little. Below are some of my treasured memories.
Please keep the smiles going! Share a favorite memory of your child or grandchild in the comments below. Can’t wait to hear your tales!

Dear Tim,
The terrible twos! Today I gave Justin a bath and intended you to go next. Before I had a chance to prepare everything, your dad called me to come look. We found you, fully clothed, playing happily in the bathtub.
The other day, I let you play with the garden hose outside. In order to keep an eye and ear on you, I kept the sliding glass door open as I practiced the piano. Suddenly a noise caused me to look up. To my horror, the garden hose, on full blast, was directed into the family room and at the carpet. At the other end of the hose was a cherub-faced little boy completely absorbed in this fun activity! Aaaaaaaaack!
At Halloween you were the “man in the moon.” Around your shoulders, a string held a yellow crescent moon to your chest, your face peeking through the hole as Daddy took you door-to-door and you got to say, “Twick, tweet!”
(Elementary school age) Tonight during devotions Daddy began by saying, “I’m going to tell you a story about two Bible characters, Abraham and …”
“Lincoln,” you piped up. When we laughed, you added, “And he chopped down a cherry tree.”

Dear Justin,
Out driving errands one day, I explained just basics, that red traffic lights mean “stop” and green means “go.” You immediately caught on and started telling me when to stop or go according to the signals. Then we came to a red light where I briefly paused before turning right. You gave me a sideways mischievous grin, “You am naughty boy?”
Today I heard you singing, “Mary had a little man . . .”
I firmly told you to get dressed this morning. You said, “You are a mad mommy. I want you to go to Korea!”
Today you informed me, referring to the carpet, “I might slip on the floor if there’s no fur there.”
The other day I overheard you and your friend, Joel, playing spaceship. “Let’s go to the moon! God and Jesus are there. ‘Hi God! Hi Jesus!’”
Joel’s mom told me that on your swimming outing she overheard from the back seat of the van one of you say, “Can Jesus see through these water goggles?”
When I opened the toy box today, to my surprise I found several tufts of hair nestled among the things. I took a good look at you with the scissors still in your hands and figured out the story. You had a section missing from your bangs, Timmy had a curl missing from the top of his head, and the floor showed signs of a haircut given to a black cat!
I was busy when I noticed that you hadn’t been around for a while. Might you be in the garage visiting the kittens? Sure enough, but what a surprise! There you sat, directly in the box, surrounded by Mommy kitty and her babies, looking very happy and content!
The other day when the mommy cat carried a kitten around to find a better “nest,” you looked puzzled. After she’d gone you said, “Kitty eating ‘nother one?”
My kids inspired me to write the following song (which I never recorded), but here are the lyrics:
ANGELS ASLEEP
Honey, come see, the kids are finally sleeping
and the moon has filled the room with a silver light.
Aren’t they beautiful, picture-perfect sweet things?
So pure and innocent—I could gaze at them all night.
Chorus
They look like angels asleep
with chubby, cherub cheeks
drifting along in dreamland on fluffy white clouds.
They’re a little piece of heaven
sent with kisses from the stars.
Don’t they melt your heart—
these sleeping little angels?
Verse
Did you know that today they shaved the dog while playing?
And the cat nearly drowned from a bath in the toilet bowl!
Can you see my hair is prematurely graying?
I really love them, but do they ever keep me on my toes!
Chorus
They look like angels asleep
with chubby, cherub cheeks
drifting along in dreamland on fluffy white clouds.
They’re a little piece of heaven
sent with kisses from the stars.
Don’t they melt your heart—
these sleeping little angels?
Bridge
Now in the morning when things get crazy
remind me of all I’ve said
and that my tender, loving feelings
return when they’re in bed!
Chorus . . .
LOVE LOVE LOVE this soooo much! sweet memories!!
One evening, a friend stopped by to give us two trout he had caught that day on his fishing trip. They were in a bucket with some ice. After he left, we were looking in the bucket and one of the fish started to move! Our daughter, Bailey, burst into tears when she saw that. "We have to save him!" She named him Greenie. We said, okay. We'll try. We filled the bucket with water and he began to swim. It was bedtime. Bailey went to sleep with hope that Greenie would survive. By the next morning, Greenie had passed away. Bailey said we had to have a funeral for him. We buried him in the backyard with speeches and prayers. Then we ate the other trout for dinner. Bailey was fine with that.
