Meaning of a Name
What does your name mean? Do you like your name?
On the simplest level, names are labels to distinguish one person from another. But names mean so much more than that; they also connect to identity.
Essence
In Judaism, your given name is considered prophetic to some extent, defining your essence; it's seen as the key to your soul.
Thus, God's names beautifully give us a glimpse into the many facets of his being. Almighty Father, Bridegroom, Wonderful Counselor, Bread of Life, Friend, Shepherd . . .
Biblical Meaning
In the Bible, a name is equal to character or reputation. Psalm 23 says that the Lord leads us in right paths "for his name's sake." In other words, it's because of his character and for the sake of his reputation that he faithfully guides and directs. Psalm 23:3 could read, "You guide me in paths of righteousness, honoring your reputation."
A name references a person's presence and power, and God's name is also used in this context: "The name of the Lord is a strong fortress; the godly run to him and are safe" (Proverbs 18:10). God's presence and power accompanies the psalmist along safe paths so that even when walking through shadowed valleys of death and loss, he fears no evil (Psalm 23:4).
In Jesus' Name
What does it mean, then, to pray in Jesus name? It means to invoke the presence, power, character, and reputation of Jesus. In essence we're saying, "Lord, I am praying this prayer based on my belief in your character and reputation. I affirm your presence here with me; and I affirm your power to answer my request!"
