Self-protectiveness Versus True Shelter
Turtles are cute. In fact, I’ve fallen in love with the YouTube skateboarding turtle who chases the house cat everywhere. When the cat paws at him, he quickly tucks his head inside his shell. Otherwise he’s fearless.
Now this is all fine and dandy in the turtle world. But it’s occurred to me that when I hide in my shell, worried about being hurt, it’s not a good thing.
Hiding prevents me from freely giving my heart to the world because I fear getting hurt. But maybe giving your heart to the world is not really safe anyway. Jesus did not entrust himself to others “because he knew what was in people” (John 2:24).
However, he did fully entrust himself to God. And from the safety of his Father’s love, he could passionately love people, even when it cost him his life. That’s amazing when you think about it.
Therefore, I too, can leave my own refuge, my own self-protectionism, and nestle my spirit under the great wings of God. Here my heart is safe. And from here it’s easier to release expectations of others or the debts they owe me. Because what does it matter? I belong to him: The Most Awesome, Almighty, Amazing Being In All the Universe! He loves me. Me! There’s no greater security.
And wouldn’t you know it. Turtles sheltering in God’s love become brave, willing to stick their necks out for others.
He will cover you with his feathers. He will shelter you with his wings. His faithful promises are your armor and protection (Psalm 91:4). (Click on the underlined words for YouTube link: Mother swan sheltering cygnets.)

This is just the reminder that I needed this morning. I got up early to pray about a difficult conversation that I need to have with an old friend. I see my side is releasing expectations of the debts they owe me. They were in the wrong, but from His shelter I can forgive nestling in my Father’s love. And only speak if it is in the best interests of them not from my wounds.
